The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts — now officially bearing Donald Trump's name after his handpicked board of trustees voted to add it to the building — began laying off employees Thursday. It's barreling toward a two-year closure that starts July 4.

Happy 250th birthday, America. Your most famous performing arts center is closed.

Here's the Timeline.

Dec 2025 Trump's handpicked board votes to add his name to the building. The Kennedy Center is now the Trump Kennedy Center.
Early 2026 Richard Grenell — whose tenure as Trump's first executive director was described as marked with "tumult" — is replaced by Matt Floca, who until recently managed facilities and operations.
March 26 Layoffs across multiple departments begin. Senior roles impacted. First major task for new executive director Floca.
July 4, 2026 Two-year closure begins. Trump announced it will shut down for "Construction, Revitalization, and Complete Rebuilding" — in honor of the country's 250th anniversary, apparently.

He renamed it after himself, installed a facilities manager as its director, started laying people off, and is closing it on the Fourth of July for two years. For "revitalization."

What the Kennedy Center Actually Is.

The Kennedy Center isn't just a building. It's the national memorial to President John F. Kennedy — established by Congress in 1964 as a living memorial to a president who was assassinated. It has hosted every major performing art form for over 50 years. It is where the country honors its artists, its culture, and its history.

Trump put his name on it. Then he closed it.
